Meet Your Neighbor: Javier Velasquez and Nicole Restivo — Taberna del Alabardero

taberna-meetyourneighborNestled on 18th Street NW just south of I Street is Taberna del Alabardero, the most authentic Spanish cuisine to be found anywhere in the United States. So authentic, the Spanish government has deemed Taberna the "best Spanish restaurant outside of Spain." High honors, indeed. Taberna has been in D.C. for twenty years, and general manager Javier Velasquez and new marketing manager Nicole Restivo are eager to continue with the restaurant's fine tradition but also keep up with current trends in Spanish cuisine. "Some of my favorite dishes are cochinillo, a suckling pig that is roasted and presented whole to the table — it's very popular here — and lubina a la sal, a dish from the south of Spain, which is a whole fish covered in salt," Javier said. Nicole is partial to the delicious shrimp tapas, and the traditional gazpacho is a perennial favorite at the restaurant. With white lace and deep red walls, Taberna del Alabardero is a unique venue that's often the location for special events or private dinners. Happy hour is another great chance to experience a touch of Spain in the Golden Triangle, when tapas and sangria are half-price. Find out more by visiting them online at www.alabardero.com, calling 202.429.2200, or stopping by the 1776 I Street NW location.

Ambassador of the Month — Vanessa Diggs

vanessaIn the year and a half since the last time Vanessa was Ambassador of the Month, she has had many unique on-the-job experiences and grown as an Ambassador. "Working Inauguration was just awesome. I worked at the Connecticut & K entrance of the Farragut North Metro and there were just so many people," Vanessa said. She and six other Ambassadors actually spent the night at the Golden Triangle Dispatch office in order to be able to help people the day of the special event.

This year's Inauguration was a remarkable time to be a Golden Triangle Ambassador, and Vanessa has had many other opportunities to gain new skills. From gathering information about bike racks and light poles for a GIS database to being an acting Ambassador supervisor while a colleague is out, Vanessa has been able to enjoy the various dimensions that come with being a Hospitality Ambassador — it's so much more than just greeting people and giving directions.

"I used to be shy, but now I recognize the "lost look" on someone and enjoy working and helping people from different states and countries," Vanessa said.

We thank Vanessa for her continued work as a Golden Triangle Ambassador and commend her on the new and varied responsibilities that come with this interesting and unique job.
