Golden Triangle Installs Winning Artistic Bike Rack to Encourage D.C. to Bike to Work

Release Date: Thursday, May 14th 2009

Golden Triangle Now Offers More Than 660 Spots for Bikes

WASHINGTON– Washington, D.C.’s Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) unveils the winning artistic bike rack today, outside the South entrance of the Dupont Circle Metro station, to celebrate National Bike Month and Bike to Work day. The Golden Triangle’s latest bike rack installment has a dual purpose: to encourage D.C. residents to bike to work, and to serve as public art.

"The Golden Triangle is thrilled to install the new ‘Bike Here’ bike rack,” said Leona Agouridis, executive director of the Golden Triangle. “We have installed 330 bike racks in the Golden Triangle since 2002 to accommodate cyclists, and we will continue to seek ways to make the central business district bike-friendly.”

This is the latest effort to transform the Golden Triangle into a bike-friendly neighborhood. The Golden Triangle will also give away a new bike to a lucky attendee at the unveiling, in time for Bike to Work Day on May 15.

Designed by Olivier Delacour, the “Bike Here” bike rack was selected from 65 entries submitted by local designers. The entries were evaluated and selected by a panel of representatives from the District government, the Golden Triangle community, and local arts and biking organizations. The “Bike Here” design is cast in vibrant green and blue steel piping, spans 13 feet – spelling out the words “bike here” – and can accommodate more than 10 locked bikes. Delacour received a $1,500 honorarium plus a complimentary Saturday night stay for two at the Mayflower Hotel in the heart of the Golden Triangle for his winning entry.

The new artistic bike rack will serve as a complement to other streetscape projects in development in the Golden Triangle, such as the installation of public art at the Farragut North Metro station and the creation of a raised, tree-lined median along Connecticut Avenue.
