BID Gives Away Free Reusable Tote Bags On First “Back to Work Day” of New DC Bag Law

The DC Bag Law that went into effect on January 1 has imposed a 5-cent tax on disposable paper and plastic bags given out at many businesses in the District. On January 4, the first day back to work under the new bag tax, the Golden Triangle BID is starting to give out 1,000 reusable vinyl tote bags to people who work and visit the Golden Triangle to support the District’s initiative and also help workers in the area save money. These bags are compact and can be carried in a purse or a pocket and can be used by the public when running errands or grabbing lunch in the neighborhood to avoid paying the new 5-cent DC bag tax. Funds from the tax will be directed toward the new Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Fund.
During the month of January 2010, Golden Triangle BID staff and Ambassadors will hand out the free reusable bags at neighborhood hotspots during the weekday lunch hour rush. The Dupont Circle south Metro entrance area, 19th Street between L and M Streets, and Farragut West Metro entrance areas will all be targeted for the distribution of reusable bags due to the high number of eateries and pedestrian traffic in those areas at lunch time.
The times and places for the bag distribution are listed below. Look for a Golden Triangle Ambassador dressed in a yellow jacket who will be handing out the free bags starting at noon until they run out on the dates and at the locations listed below. Ambassadors will have approximately 50 to 60 bags to hand out at each location on each day.
