Emergency Preparedness Fair Helps Downtown Workers Plan for the Unexpected
Washington, D.C. [Sept 22, 2008]--Emergencies are never expected, but it is possible to plan for them. This Tuesday, September 23rd, downtown workers can come to Farragut Square Park from 12:00-2:00 pm to receive information on personal and business preparedness to ensure they are ready for any emergency, large or small. The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) is sponsoring its second annual Emergency Preparedness Fair in coordination with several DC agencies including the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), Serve DC, Metropolitan Police Department, Fire Department, Department of Health, Department of Transportation, and Metro.
More than ten agencies will be providing the public with useful materials and instructions for various emergency situations, arming attendees with the information they need to develop a sound emergency plan. Those who visit Farragut Square Park will be able to sign up for text alerts from the DC Department of Homeland Security, schedule an appointment to have emergency managers evaluate their emergency plan (both business and personal), plan alternate routes out of the city with Metro and DC transportation officials, and much more.
“More than 75,000 people work each day in this high-traffic, high-profile district. The Emergency Preparedness Fair is meant to remind businesses, employees and visitors in the Golden Triangle area of the importance of emergency preparedness and to give them the tools they need to develop a plan,” said Leona Agouridis, Executive Director of the Golden Triangle BID.
The Fair is part of a month of preparedness activities planned by the District as part of National Preparedness Month, which is designed to encourage individuals across the nation to take steps to increase their preparedness, including making a family emergency plan, making an emergency supply kit, and being informed about emergencies that may affect them.
“Many people have focused their preparedness planning around their home and family, but it’s just as crucial to plan for an unexpected event while at work,” said Darrell Darnell, Director of DC HSEMA. “The recent bombings in Yemen and Pakistan serve as reminders that emergencies can happen at any time, anywhere. We hope many workers in the Golden Triangle area take advantage of the resources that will be available to them in Farragut Park on Tuesday,” he said.
