Keeping the Golden Triangle clean, green and golden

Each day, the Golden Triangle BID keeps the streets of DC’s central business district clean by emptying trash cans, sweeping curbs, removing graffiti, and gum busting sidewalks. This April, the Golden Triangle BID is dedicating a week to conduct an intensive cleaning effort designed to not only clean but also beautify and enhance the Golden Triangle’s streetscape. This year’s Golden Triangle “Clean, Green & Golden” week will involve the coordination and support of numerous DC agencies, local residents, workers, and others, and will take the BID’s routine cleaning to a higher level and leave a lasting impact on the neighborhood.

This year’s Spring "Clean, Green & Golden" Cleanup Week included numerous projects:

Recycling Event
“Flowers for Phones” cell phone recycling event takes place on April 5 and April 6. The Golden Triangle is encouraging people to drop off an old cell phone to be recycled and get a free potted flower and be entered to win a prize from area businesses.

Painting
The Golden Triangle BID will collect data on light poles, bike racks, modular newspaper units and traffic boxes that need to be painted and will have these streetscape features painted.

Bike Racks
The Golden Triangle BID will identify locations and install up to 15 new bike racks.

Flower Planting
The Golden Triangle BID will continue and expand last year’s successful Golden Streets initiative to encourage properties to plant yellow flowers in their flower/tree boxes. Last year resulted in nearly 80% of the BID’s properties participating.

Landscaping
The spring flowers will be installed in Duke Ellington Park. The tree boxes along K Street will receive fresh mulch. Other landscaping efforts for trees throughout the Golden Triangle will be implemented.

Prune and Plant Trees
The BID will coordinate with DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration to see that tree boxes on the planting list receive new trees. Multiple street trees will be planted in coordination with Casey Trees to inform Golden Triangle members and the public about caring for urban street trees.

DDOT Fix-it
Golden Triangle BID will identify outstanding service requests and DDOT will perform a concentrated fix-it for the identified areas needing repair.

Newspaper Box Cleanup
Golden Triangle staff and newspaper publishers and distributors will walk the Golden Triangle neigborhood and identify newspaper boxes to be fixed, replaced, moved or removed.

Rolling Cleanup
Ambassadors will focus on specific blocks to conduct a thorough white-glove level rolling clean up, pressure wash sidewalks, and clean in and around the parks.
