Water purifies, rejuvenates, cleanses, and heals. Spirits inhabit the waters and require homage or deference. From the droplets in a baptismal font to the scattering of ashes on a holy river, water blesses human lives. Photographer John Stanmeyer traveled the world in search of the many ways different cultures relate to water. He captured everything from offerings alongside the sacred Ganges in India to waterfall rituals in Japan, Laos, and Haiti.
