Each film will be followed by a discussion with the director.
Emily Chu has been raised to believe that she can achieve anything she puts her mind to.
Even if ‘anything’ is at odds with her traditional Chinese parents’ wish for her to become a doctor like her two older sisters, there’s always a way around it. It’s not a bad lie if everyone is happy, and after all she gets to pursue her dream of being the next Spielberg. Everything is coming up roses – until she meets James Harrison, and accidentally falls in love with him.
Emily should know better than to fall in love outside her parents’ expectations, even if he is a kindred nerd spirit. Her parents are touchy about the whole “we came to New Zealand to give you the best opportunities” thing, and eldest sister Susan had to break up with her first boyfriend under threat of disownment from Dr Chu because he was not Chinese. Problem is, by the time Emily realizes her mistake, James has fallen irrevocably in love with her too. There’s nothing for it but to keep their relationship a secret…so long as everybody is happy.
