Steve Maguire & Marcia Wong: Science Club

Science Club may not have been cool in high school, but the bar/lounge version you'll find at 1136 19th Street NW in the Golden Triangle certainly is. Owner Steve Maguire opened Science Club in 2005, drawing from his education in geology at George Washington University and honoring the interesting ambiance of the rowhouse the lounge is housed in, with its illuminated globes and etched glass windows. Marcia Wong added the important scientific details to the space--microscope, periodic table--and Science Club was born.

Science Club is certainly no theme bar--"If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if we do shots in beakers," Steve said--it's the kind of place that is truly conducive to conversation (there are no TVs) and interaction. A chalkboard graces the wall allowing patrons to brainstorm and jot down ideas, and to date, Steve knows of eight couples who met at Science Club that are now married (two couples he actually introduced himself).

Steve, Marcia, and the staff serve up a delicious menu that is exclusively vegetarian and vegan and they've extended their happy hour on Monday through Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. to keep the conversations (and matchmaking!) rolling. Stop by to meet the friendly staff and find a new after-work hangout in Science Club.   Learn more about Science Club »
