Call for Artists to Design Creative Bike Racks

The Golden Triangle BID has issued a Call for Entries requesting bicycle rack designs that will be both functional and compelling artistic additions to the BID’s cosmopolitan streetscape. After successfully installing a creative bike rack at the Dupont Circle south Metro entrance in May 2009, the Golden Triangle seeks to bring even more creative bike racks to the streets with the help of local art and bicycling communities.

Last year’s winning bike rack, designed by local architect Olivier Delacour, was selected from a pool of 65 submissions. Entitled “Bike Here,” Delacour’s design spells out the words “bike here” and can accommodate more than 10 locked bikes.

The selected designer will receive a $1,500 honorarium plus a complimentary Saturday night stay for two at The Hay-Adams. The winning design will then be fabricated into one or more bicycle racks and placed at location(s) within the Golden Triangle neighborhood.

The Call for Entries, with more detailed design guidelines, is available for download here. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m., R. Douglas Fields will discuss and sign copies of his book, "The Other Brain: From Dementia to Schizophrenia, How New Discoveries about the Brain Are Revolutionizing Medicine and Science". Despite everything that has been written about the brain, a very important part of this vital organ has been overlooked in most books—until now. "The Other Brain" is the story of glia, which make up approximately 85 percent of the cells in the brain. Long neglected as little more than cerebral packing material (glia means glue), glia are sparking a revolution in brain science. Find out about other book events in February at Reiter's »

Jon Ponce: Bench Gym

No membership, individualized programs, state-of-the-art equipment, one-on-one personal training….sounds like your fitness dream, doesn’t it? Jon Ponce, manager/owner of Bench Gym located in the lobby of 1150 18th Street, will tell you this could be your reality. At Bench Gym, everything is based on trainer/client relationships to help you achieve your results, whether you just want one hour of personal training, a package of ten, or ongoing sessions. “We design programs based on a client's needs, there’s no specific program,” Jon said. “Everyone has different goals—we listen to our clients and what they want to achieve and give them options.”

Bench Gym opened six years ago and since then Jon has made it his mission to bring fitness to the Golden Triangle’s business community. “It’s rewarding to hear a client tell you about their progress—that they are able to fit into their old dress or jeans—and to see the increased self-confidence that comes with progress,” Jon said.

The real benefit of Bench Gym comes from the family support system. Trainers, staff, and clients all support each other and know each other not just by name, but by each others “heart’s goals” as Jon said. Bench Gym also hosts special social events throughout the year that give clients a chance to share their interests and experiences with each other in a friendly atmosphere.

“The challenge about fitness is sticking with a routine,” Jon said, “But the close-knit support system and progress are what keep people coming back to Bench Gym.” Stop in to meet Jon and crew at Bench Gym and learn what a difference working out with a trainer at this unique gym can make for you.
